To comply with UK law, you must keep a detailed record of your financials for at least seven years. Bookkeeping can be time-consuming, especially when matching receipts to bank transactions eats into your spare time. I specialise in escape room bookkeeping and I’m meticulous about categorisation, so when it comes to reporting, you can easily track the performance of individual escape rooms, revenue streams and campaigns.
I know that escape room payroll can be complex, with a mix of full-time, part-time, zero-hour casual workers, contract staff, and directors, all with varying rates, pay dates, pensions, and entitlements. Your Game Masters deserve to be paid accurately and on time — after all, they look after your customers, and it’s essential this is done right. Let me handle your payroll, so you can spend your time designing more puzzles!
Escape room sales and purchases may be subject to VAT, and depending on your VAT status, you’ll need to report to HMRC and file the correct taxes. I’ve managed escape rooms with varying VAT statuses, from no VAT to Flat Rate, and onto standard VAT as the business grows. If you’re VAT-registered, I’ll ensure your returns are filed accurately and in line with Making Tax Digital (MTD), so you can focus on what matters most.
If your escape room is set up as a private limited company, you’ll need to file your statutory accounts with Companies House each year. These accounts show your business’s activity over the financial year, and the filing deadline is usually 9 months after your year-end. If I’m already looking after your bookkeeping, preparing your annual accounts is a breeze — I’ll take care of all the filing and make sure everything’s in order.
As a limited company, you’ll need to file a Company Tax Return with HMRC each year — even if your business has made a loss or has no Corporation Tax (tax on profits) to pay. The filing deadline is 12 months after your year-end. But if there’s any Corporation Tax to pay, it must be settled before the due date, which is 9 months and 1 day after the year-end. I’ll handle the deadlines, so your escape room’s taxes are filed on time, every time.
Every escape room business operating as a limited company must file a confirmation statement each year to keep Companies House up to date with details like directors, shareholders, and your registered address. You can handle it yourself if you’d like, but miss the deadline, and you risk fines or even being struck off the register. Why stress? Let me take care of it for you — quick, accurate, and hassle-free.
If you run your escape room as a sole trader, partnership, or as a limited company director earning dividends, you'll need to file a Self Assessment Tax Return (or Personal Tax Return) to declare your income. The financial tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, and the filing deadline is midnight on 31 January of the following year. For peace of mind, I’m here to help you file your Self Assessment on time, so you don’t have to stress about it.
