About My Experience
10,000+ Hours Perfecting
Escape Room Finances
It's often said that spending 10,000 hours in any field is the key to mastering it. Well, I’ve far surpassed that mark — in fact, I’ve almost doubled it. Over the past decade, I’ve not only worked closely with escape room owners, but I've also been deeply involved in running my own successful business and helping launch several others. From overseeing day-to-day financial operations to guiding new and established escape room businesses through their unique financial challenges, I’m in a truly unique position to offer expert advice. With this wealth of hands-on experience, I’m here to help you make informed financial decisions that support your growth and long-term success.
10+ Years Building Escape Rooms
In the last ten years, I’ve not only been a financial expert in the escape room industry, but I’ve also been deeply hands-on in designing and building escape rooms — including my own, Enigma Escape, with popular games like The Killer and The Breakout. I’ve gained a wide range of construction trade skills along the way, from framing, drywalling, and carpentry to plumbing, electrics, and decorating.
In addition to the physical construction, I’ve also mastered escape room tech installations, setting up CCTV, visual and audio systems, and programming tech like COGS. I’m experienced in planning and wiring props and sensors, and I fully understand how all these components come together to create a fully immersive experience. This hands-on experience means I know exactly what goes into an escape room build — and as your bookkeeper, you won’t have to waste time explaining the intricacies of your business. I understand your industry from the ground up.
A Career in Project Management
Throughout my career, I’ve honed my skills in project management, starting in the 3D printing industry, where I spent several years leading a team to produce high-quality prototype models. From customer enquiry to delivery, I managed every stage of the process, gaining invaluable experience in handling projects from start to finish.
When I transitioned into my own business, I applied these skills to my escape room builds, overseeing each one successfully and keeping them within budget. Later, as Head of Projects for other escape room businesses, I managed multiple projects in parallel — from design and marketing to full-scale builds — all while juggling the bookkeeping.
One of my proudest achievements was managing the Purgatory Bar build, a hellishly themed cocktail bar in London, complete with devilish games and drinks. This project involved coordinating several teams, managing various trades and contractors, and ensuring everything met tight deadlines and stayed within budget. The project was a success, and it even won an award! While I’m proud of the outcome, full credit goes to the entire team whose hard work made it possible — this wouldn’t have happened without them.
A Decade of Business Acumen
I grew up in a family of business owners, so I’ve always had a natural understanding of what it takes to run a business. However, my first real leap into entrepreneurship came in 2014 when I launched my own escape room. While I had the business instincts from my upbringing, starting an escape room was a whole new challenge — one that no one in my family had experience with. With a £70,000 investment and no clear blueprint, I quickly realised this wasn’t just about creating and building an amazing game. I had to learn everything from scratch, from managing finances and HR to marketing, leadership, and much more. These were areas I never expected to dive into, but I had no choice. There was simply no room for mistakes.
Thankfully, my business was a huge success. I made back the £70,000 investment in just six months, and seven years later, I sold the business for six figures. I feel privileged to have taken a business from concept to exit, and the lessons I learned along the way have shaped my approach to business. Today, that knowledge allows me to advise clients at all stages — whether they’re just starting out or already established. With nearly a decade of hands-on business experience, I know what it takes to navigate the complexities of business growth, and I’m here to guide you through it.
